Developed initially for use in space programs to ensure that the best possible welds were produced, the 3 ½% Nickel Steel Welding Rod is a product of almost entirely pure materials and flows smoothly when used with Oxy-Acetylene or TIG to produce a non-porous and ultra-smooth weld. Due to its effectiveness, gunsmiths frequently request this rod for welding bolt handles and other items destined to be polished following the welding process. Luckily, Jim Thompson of Maverick Gun Works in Topeka, Kansas, has identified a supplier of this rare material.
Jim Thompson notes that he has finally located the 3 ½% Nickel Steel Welding Rod and that the results are perfect, albeit costly. When using it for welding bolt handles or jobs where an impeccable weld is necessary, Jim suggests bringing the parts to welding temperature with a large flame, then reducing it until it is only hissing. Jim employs a No. 2 tip but suggests that another might work better. He urges that one should work at a reasonable pace, avoid overheating, and that one can work with it all day if necessary. The weld may also be filed or machined without difficulty. Be sure to use a neutral flame and note that there is no flux or other coding on the part.
