Bottleneck rifle and pistol cases require a full length die set, which consists of a full length sizing die and a seater die. By adjusting the full length die up or down in the press, it will bump the case shoulder to an extent. To ensure a correct shoulder bump, a cartridge headspace gauge tool is recommended. In addition, the full length die will also size the body of the case, making it easy to chamber for the next firing. The die will decap the spent primer, and the expander ball will pass through the neck of the case to size it to the correct tension. Before full length sizing, cases need to be lubricated.
For bottleneck cases, RCBS seater dies are used to properly seat bullets in either full length sized or neck sized cases. These seater dies have a built-in crimp ring, giving you the option to crimp the case into the bullet if desired. Depending on your preference, the seater die can be easily adjusted to crimp or not to crimp by raising or lowering the die position in the press.
Full length 2 die sets are crucial to the reloading process and serve as a foundation for it. It is common for shooters to exhaust multiple barrels or rifles using just one full length reloading die set. As a result, we highly recommend that beginners start with a full length die set and become familiar with its setup before diving into other types of reloading dies.
