According to Derek Peterson, the president of Peterson Cartridge, the decision to build the tooling necessary to manufacture .22 Creedmoor brass was made due to the rise in popularity of predator and varmint hunting over long distances. Additionally, Peterson noted that shooting the round is just plain fun due to its low recoil, flat trajectory, ability to maintain wind resistance, and accuracy up to 800 yards.

Peterson Cartridge already makes casings for 6.5mm and 6mm Creedmoor. However, the tooling for the .22 Creedmoor casings was designed to have improved features including increased head hardness to handle higher pressures and a slightly increased internal volume to work with slow-burning powders like RL 26 or H1000 which many shooters prefer for this round.

Prior to the appearance of Peterson's casings on the market, individuals had to neck down 6mm or 6.5mm Creedmoor casings to .22. Necking down larger casings like this often results in excess brass bunching up in the neck which negatively affects loading, bullet release, and accuracy. Furthermore, necking down casings that have been properly annealed leads to them no longer being properly annealed after being "worked" in this manner. Finally, this process results in thicker neck walls than ideal, whereas Peterson's .22 Creedmoors all fall within the ideal neck wall thickness range of 0.0143 to 0.0148.

Peterson worked with Derrick Ratliff of Horizon Firearms to develop the casing. Horizon Firearms has been chambering guns in .22 Creedmoor since 2014, and played a key role in moving it from an unknown wildcat to the popular caliber it is today.
